Happy “National Poetry Month!”  I love poetry, so I am very excited there is a whole month dedicated to it.  Still reading the book about poetry I mentioned in a previous post.  It’s great and I am continuing to write more poems.  Finally wrote my first sestina, but think I prefer sonnets and free verse poetry.  Here are a few links for places to explore more about poetry :   Poetry Foundation , Everyday Poets, and Poets.org.

This post is a little later than I had planned, but life has gotten a bit busy.  The good thing is I am still writing and plan to endeavor to be better about blogging as well.  Presently been working on a few essays as well as the poetry.  Happy writing and I hope everyone has a good Easter!

Power of Words

*I apologize for little different than usual post, this is more of a venting.*

Words have the power to build up or breakdown.  I read a blog post the other day, which broke my heart.  It was so tragic, I don’t even want to post the link to it here.

The blog post was a book review and the writer of the post was extremely too harsh, in my opinion, to the book author.  Some of the words used were dull and mediocre to describe the book.  This wasn’t enough of a critique, so the post writer had to go on to say they couldn’t read any more of it and how bad it was it was part of a series.

Even without having read any of the books in the series, I could applaud the book author just for being able to complete a book.  As a fairly new writer with limited experience in rejections it could about make me hesitant to ever publicly offer any writing for critique.  I will though and look forward to feedback.

One day I or any of us may be in a situation to offer feedback on a fellow writer’s writing and I hope we offer honest constructive criticism.  At the same time I hope we are not cruel.  It takes a certain amount of bravery for someone to share their writing with others.

Life experiences with emotional and verbal abuse have also colored my opinion on this subject.  If you’re made to feel you can’t do anything right, where’s the incentive to try.  I guess I could also blame it on living in the South.  I wholeheartedly believe the wise saying many mothers have taught their children, “If you don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.”  Guess I’m heading that direction, so I’ll stop my ranting and go write.

Poetry and Life Inspired Writing

Poetry BooksThis has been an incredible week for writing.  My mind seems to be so full of ideas that my fingers have trouble keeping up.  I have really enjoyed writing poetry, but have been writing several other things as well.  Here is a short poem I wrote a bit ago :

Thoughts and thoughts on my mind
Pen to paper all the time
Releasing thoughts to unwind
Writing, the joy found is sublime

As usual, I have spent quite a bit of time researching information online, but have done a better job of time management.  I have been writing every day this week, even for hours at some times.  Two resources I have really utilized often are the online dictionary at www.dictionary.com and Rhymer by WriteExpress at www.rhymer.com .  I know all poetry doesn’t have to rhyme, but I do have a preference for rhyming poetry.

Just for pure pleasure, there is a resource soon to be a favorite of mine, which is online radio.  I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner, but it is nice to be listening to relaxing music as I am writing away on my laptop.  The one I have been listening to this morning is AOL Radio, which can be found at http://music.aol.com/radioguide/bb .

There are so many sources for inspiration to write in the world around us.  I have decided I am going to start keeping an eye out for inspirational quotes about writing and pictures of things which inspire me.  Another wish list item is a digital camera, so I can take pictures to put with some of the articles I am writing as well as inspirational things I encounter in my journeys outdoors.  One of my favorite writing breaks is to go for a walk in the woods behind our home.
